As usual in the bigger towns of Bouches-du-Rhône, the old quarter lies in the heart of the relatively newer town.

The quarter has narrow winding streets, beautiful, well restored houses and old fountains, small, shady squares with restaurants, cafés and small shops.
St-Rémy-de-Provence

St-Rémy-de-Provence is rich in historical testimonies.

The town is built on top of one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe. Here lie the remains of the Gallo-Roman town Comptoir de Glanum, founded in the 3rd century B.C. and later used by the Romans under Julius Cesar. There are still excavations going on. St-Rémy-de-Provence also has two unique Roman monuments, an arch of triumph, dating back to the 1st century B.C. and a very well preserved mausoleum. The mausoleum is a three level high funeral monument, built in memory of Emperor Augustus’ two grand children Gajus and Lucius Cesar.
St-Rémy-de-Provence

St-Rémy-de-Provence has over the years attracted numerous artists including van Gogh, who has produced a great many paintings in the area around St-Rémy-de-Provence.

A little out of town a small road leads up to Clinique de St. Paul, a former monastery in the Middle Ages (called St.-Paul de Mausole) and later transformed into a psychiatric hospital. It was here van Gogh was hospitalized after having cut off his ear. The part of the building which is not used as a hospital is open to the public.
