The white limestone massif, les Alpilles, is a 24 km long mountain range between the Rhône and the Durance valleys. The highest point is Tour des Opies, 498 metres. It is a relatively uninhabited area. A great many villages in the area around les Alpilles have, however, become famous because of the many Roman remains - les Antiques by St-Rémy to the north, Les Beaux-de-Provence to the south and a museum and a church in Eygalières to the northeast.
