La Turbie lies on the upper coast road, Grande Corniche, between Menton and Nice, just above Monaco. La Turbie boasts of outstanding panoramic views from Ventigmilia and Cap Martin in the east to Cap Ferrat, Nice, Antibes and the Estérel coast in the west. La Turbie is a charming little village with two ancient town gates and lots of ancient houses from the 11th and 13th century. The town is, however, most famous for its mighty Roman monument, Trophée des Alpes, dating back to the 6th century, a gift from the Roman Senate to Emperor August. It was raised as a testimony of the Emperor’s victory over the 44 Gallic tribes who surrendered at the conquest of the Alps.
